The time has come and below are a couple of MUST SEE films tonight! Whether you are going to a party in fancy dress or trick or treating (hopefully just the kids doing this haha) you should definitely find some time to stick on a scary film and get those goosebumps going! Get the popcorn ready, and don't forget the answer to the very important question...

To be honest, around this time of year, any horror film can be watched and enjoyed. The above just happen to be my favourites but below are some other classics that can give you all a good scare!

The Origin of Trick-or-Treating

Trick-or-Treating is also known as 'Guising' and has been recorded as far back at 1895 in Scotland and may have links to Celtic festivals. There are a few theories contesting where it began but it seems to have become far more popular since the 1950s, especially in Northern America. 'Souling' (England and Ireland)has also been linked to this tradition where the poor would go from house to house singing hymns to the dead to receive food or coins. Nowadays children dress up to receive sweets and it tends to result in a house being 'tricked' (usually by egging the house) if the owners do not comply to the offering of treats.

It is safe to say that years ago the costumes were far more haunting (above) and I do think it is customary for most houses to provide a pot of sweets for children, even if you leave it on the porch. I always try and provide sweets to avoid being tricked! I can't say I agree with the idea of being tricked in the first place and since there is no real evidence for children in the past to ever vandalise I don't really see how this came about! It was usually said and never done it seems.

Decorating ones home around this time of year was originally done to ward off evil spirits which explains the presence of a scary 'lantern' made from a pumpkin.

I love this time of year but I never really go all out like they do in America although I would love to visit my family over there to experience it! I need to add that to the Bucket List :)

Trick 'r Treat (2007)

I was having a little look online for some interesting films I could watch around this spooky time of year and I cam across this film Trick 'r Treat, written and directed by Michael Dougherty. It includes four Halloween focused stories which interweave to create one. They all feature Sam, a Trick or Treater who teaches all why we shouldn't break the Halloween traditions.

As soon as I saw the images for this film I thought it looked quite creepy and even though it isn't recent, it is new to me so I will be watching this!

A Few Family Films...

Halloween is a time to trick or treat but also to spend some time with those at home watching some good films! Below are some clips/trailers from the films I think are a must see for all the family around this time of year!


Hocus Pocus (1993)

Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Funnily enough these two great family films (both PG)were made the same year and they are both funny and creepy but enjoyable for any age! I have watched both every year since I can remember and I still enjoy them thoroughly.

All Hallows' Eve Run Up

It's one of my favourite times of year! Halloween! The one time of year when the souls of the departed are supposed to roam the earth! I do love this festival as it allows me to indulge in good old horror flicks!

Up until the 31st I will be posting some creepy pictures accompanied by some poetry as well as film trailers that I think should most definitely be watched this time of year!

I have had one great insight - seeing some of the classics at the Prince Charles Cinema. Check out the link and see what they are showing. I have my tickets booked at midnight to see Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) which should be amazing as I wasn't even born when the original was on the big screen!

I am really looking to having some movie marathons and also on the night itself my Aunty - Mystic Mary is having a Halloween party so we are all dressing up and she will be performing tarot readings! In the stuffy heat I notice her, her eyes burning into me

I breathe in the filthy air and try to ignore but she draws me in

The longer she stares, the more I wonder

Do I know this sad girl sitting on the floor, have I wronged her?

She frightens me to a slight degree

The curiosity is eating at me

Why is she so intent on grabbing my attention?

I give her a fleeting look

She remains stern and her eyes are locked

I realise I am all alone on this carriage with the sad lost girl

Taunting me with her glare

Her stop approaches, it seems

As she gathers up her belongings

I wait for the inevitable confrontation that never came

And a part of me is disappointed as the mystery is not explained

She floats past me but never releases her eerie grip

She whispers a line that will haunt me forever

“I was never here’’

As I wait for my stop I feel her eyes on me

Burning with torment and anguish from afar



A shudder engulfs me and a sinister pang of guilt arises

A past memory envelops me of distant nightmares

Now I remember, now I see

This is the girl who haunts me, every night just past three

The girl on the floor is the one who knocks on my door

And tells me she loves me



She stands in the shadows of my subconscious

And never lets me sleep

How could I forget the one action I regret?

Letting this poor girl go in the darkness that night

Now I am terrified and every sound gives me a fright

And I see her in every dream

Now as I sit alone on the platform I can see

That these nightmares are now a reality

I see her harrowing face in the mist

Blowing me her last ever kiss
