I am back from holiday, back to work and back to reviewing! I am so excited to be back home (how sad?) and to catch up on all my extra-curricular activities haha!
My holiday was amazing, I loved Napa this year and I met so many interesting people. Limassol was great, my favourite club was Drops Beach Bar and I even enjoyed their karaoke night (in Greek - haha). I personally found Castle Club to be the best this year in Napa, went there the most and I finally went to an after party - River Reggae, although I do not recommend walking there after four hours of straight dancing!

I have been slacking on some of my film posts. My passions are writing, poetry and films and I have had more time to focus on my poetry lately and due to work constraints haven't had the time to get down to the cinema as often as I would like to.
I am off on holiday for 3 weeks to sunny Cyprus, my homeland so I will not be posting for a while and I certainly won't get the chance to see all the films I want to :(
However in the meantime I would like to point you in the right direction for film reviews - Unparallelled Reflection. I work with this team on Fluid Language and they have branched out into film reviewing so it would be great support for them if I pass on their site to some of my loyal readers.
I will be back on track with watching the most recent films and reviewing once I am back from my holiday and I look forward to doing so! It has been far too long!
My friend has decided to dabble in the writing world and with some thoughts weighing on his mind he decided to transfer them into a poem. I love the exprerssion in this poem and I think for a first attempt, he has shown incredible talent! So I will now share his words...
Close to three decades of blood, sweat and tears of joy
Tears of pain and tears of laughter
Memories of ‘back in the day’, weighed down by an overwhelming sense of underachievement
This, is my quarter life crisis
Still young at heart and young in the face as the doors of opportunity appear to slam shut, hit me in the arse and lock themselves behind me
“If I knew then what I know now”, as I write this apology to my 15 year old self
Filled with regrets, replaying episodes of the past 26 years I take stock of my assets
My health, my family, my friends
Money can’t buy me love and I will repay them all with my successes
So as I write this promise to myself in 5 – 10 years I am consoled by the thought that “Life begins at 40”
I was posting some of my poetry on Fluid Language - a blogspot I write for quite regularly - and a twitter friend suggested that I should try some non-rhyming poetry as this may enhance the intensity of my poems.
I love to write simply, express emotions through being real and not smothering my words with patronising intellect. All to often I feel people go out of their way to find words to use in a book or poem that you would never use in real life, therefore I write as I would do normally. I do not hide my true feelings behind a mask.
However I do like to take on suggestions and I do respect those who write non-rhyming as this provides another realm of interesting poetry for the reader to submerse themselves in.
So I took on board this feedback. I have written non-rhyming poetry before but felt it did not have the kick that my other poems had, ironically. So here is what I wrote in response to the feedback. I will post my other entries when I find them as they are somewhere in a diary that I will have to look up as I never posted them.
I'm trapped in a prison that is the subconscious of my mind
I wish I could tap into it and release the inner yearnings
Of a lost girl who has many hidden revelations dying to creep out
But they are locked away and refuse to be unleashed unto the world
I can't beg anymore for my mind to succumb
I just want these hot sweats and nightmares to end
In the dead of night I wake but I forget in an instance the dreaded deed I seek
I wish I could savour the memory and remember the secret I was once familiar with
But it seems I must remain clueless for there must be a reason
For my inner consciousness to take this episode into the depths of my hidden desires
There has to be a reason I am now ignorantly blissful but obviously remorseful
Maybe I shouldn't delve too deep into an answer I secretly don't want to know...
Clueless I remain in the prison of my mind
This prison has somehow set me free of external guilt
It is there somewhere but not right here
And maybe I'm grateful for my mind's choice
I'll slam the doors on this regretful wish and no longer pester my thoughts
From the trailer alone I can see this film is going to be amazing! I love Christian Bale as Batman (I think he is one of the best) but there are some new additions that can make this even better! Anne Hathaway stars as Catwoman but more importantly the sexy Tom Hardy as Bane. Hardy is really choosing his films well and I can't wait to see him as a villain!
The last time he was featured as one of the villains, it was in Batman and Robin (1997) which was more of a comedy version of this much loved comic and it also featured Mr Freeze and Poison Ivy. Funnily enough I actually enjoyed this film as a child but now, I prefer the more serious and dark take on the mysterious Batman.
I look forward to seeing this and reviewing it as soon as I can. I still have The Pact and The Chernobyl Diaries to review. Sorry for the delay but I will get these up shortly!
Instinct takes over and it is pure adrenaline that drives you. Your hair is dishevelled as you angrily push the straying strands from your face. The sweat is slowly trickling down your forehead as you perspire in anticipation.
You know the truth but no one else believes you. this is because he is such a charmer, such a good believer in his own lies. You see red. His face is red, the room has blanketed in a red hue associated with some cheap brother, ironically. You want to lash out. It takes every inch of will power not to smash his smug face in.
He calls you crazy. You are crazy. You are crazy in love with a man that wants nothing more than to hurt you, for some reason you cannot fathom. He calls you crazy. He is crazy to call you that, if he knew better he would shut the hell up, pack his bags and leave you the hell alone.
He doesn't know any better because he never truly listens. He doesn't listen to the faint sound of despair in your angry, shrill voice. He doesn't acknowledge the pain behind your eyes and he fails to see the effect he has on you.
As always you deduce from his untucked shirt and stale smell of cologne that he has been out all night and not alone. He tells you another line, another incredible story of an event so stupid it's almost believable.
This time you have had it. This time is the last you tell yourself. This time you are at the end of your fading tether. You repeat this in your head as you scream your obscenities at him.
He does whatever he pleases and this is where the frustration stems. The fact that you end up alone and angry on a regular occasion. This time is the last, you tell yourself again and again. The rage is too great and your disdain for this pathetic man standing before you is too great, you say to yourself.
In this angry discussion, she has never looked so beautiful. The sweat glistens off of her brow and her golden hair flows effortlessly down her back. As he stares at her in mid-rant, he forgets what it is about her that he frequently uses to justify his behaviour. She looks better than ever before. During their time together he glimpses her inner beauty here and there but she rarely allows him to see it anymore. He brushes past her without a second look and goes about his business because he has to, because she refuses to let her guard down anymore. She is negative. She has lost the energy he once loved about her. In moments like this, he sees the beauty behind her angry passion. She looks crazy but she has that energy that makes him want her more than anyone in the world. He forgets what he ever hated about her in that one frivolous moment.
This behaviour becomes a circular destruction of a once loving relationship.
This behaviour is the demise of society and expands the divide between men and women even further.
Women seem to change once comfortable, they forget their frivolous nature when they first met their love. Men then decide to take matters in their own hands and avoid the subject but manage to get their needs elsewhere. Sometimes the roles are reversed. Sometimes the pair do the same thing to each other yet still remain in a loveless relationship.
Whichever way it happens, it isn't healthy but it makes people feel alive. It makes people feel stupid but human. It makes them feel wanted and loved. It makes them feel something, anything...
I finally watched Somewhere in Time (1980). My God sister told me about it after we had another discussion regarding my favourite film - Titanic. I love romance and films that emphasise an element of destiny and fate so she told me about this film that had the same effect on her as Titanic has on me.
Last night we sat down (no phones allowed being the rule, as my God sister insisted I watch it with my full attention, when I broke this rule I was snapped back into my place with a quick 'this part is important!' LOL) and I got to grips with this time travelling romance film that mind f*@ked me to the extreme!
Firstly I was struck by the beginning of the film, an elderly woman approached Richard (Christopher Reeve) at his opening night of his play and she hauntingly captured the rooms attention. She took his hand and put an old pocket watch in it, she closed his hand and whispered 'Come back to me'. It honestly sent a chill down my spine (even though my God sister had re-enacted this scene for me previously with much passion) and was a great way to set the scene and get the questions running through your mind.
Richard is a playwright and had his opening night of his play at the theatre near the Grand Hotel where he visited some eight years after this encounter with the old woman. He was drawn to this place and later he found out why. He comes across an old photo hanging in the Hall of History and is mesmerised by the woman in the photo. Her beauty is apparent but he is not sure why he is so obsessed with her.
Eventually he discovers that the old woman that gave him the pocket watch was in fact the woman in this photo, Elise McKenna who was a famous actress and had stayed at that hotel in 1912. He became engrossed in the notion that he had known this woman on a deeper level and researched her life and came across a book regarding time travelling from his college professor in her belongings.
He then tries to do the impossible by attempting to travel back in time to 1912 when he discovered he had signed in to the visitor's log book at the exact same hotel almost 60 years earlier.
The poignant thing in this film is the fact that he does meet this woman and they have a whirlwind romance but he inevitably has to return to the future, where he came from. The trick was not to remember the future and to completely immerse himself in the past in order to stay with Elise, his true love. They both fell for each other which is why they were heartbroken when Richard disappeared after finding a 1979 coin in the pocket of his suit, reminding him of the future and dragging him back against his will.
The trip back to the future completely drained him, he was heartbroken at the fact that in his future, Elise was now dead but in her past, he was not able to stay because he was reminded of his future (confusing I know). The point is, they were in love and meant to be but living in two different eras and only able to be together through the form of time travel, star crossed lovers if you will.
The film really does boggle the mind as you think to yourself, did he try and go into the past originally to find her because she gave him the watch? He must of given her the watch before in order for her to find him in the future to give it back to him. He then went back to find her again but she could not warn him of what would make him remember his future as she did not know he would have forgotten the modern coin in his pocket.
Now I understand, this is one complicated explanation of a film and trust me, I am having a hard time getting my words right to explain this film but that is the beauty of it. The viewer has to build up their own perception of how Richard's time travelling idea came about in the first place and why he could never go back to her again. It is a very subjective film that leaves many debates and opinions open for discussion.
The fact is, they both died of a broken heart, they were both born in the wrong era destined to be with each other but fate was too cruel to enable them to be with each other. They experienced a short-lived romance that lasted them a life-time and that to me is the greatest love story.
This is a must see just for the sake of trying to figure out my review of this film LOL. I hope I have been as clear as possible but it truly is a worthwhile film for any hopeless romantics out there! The acting is fantastic and Christopher Reeve really is a likable character and easy to watch on screen for the entirety of the film while Jane Seymour is as captivating and beautiful as ever.
I have been to the cinema lately and noticed some good films are coming out! However I doubt I will be able to see all of them, I thought I would post the trailers to see what my readers think. If you have seen any of them yet, please comment below and let me know what you recommend!
Knowing me, I will still make the time to see them on the big screen but just in case, I would love some feedback and thought the trailers would be a nice edition to my blog to prep for my reviews.

I decided to stick on a film, one that would satisfy my urge to be intrigued, to laugh and to cry. I chose a film I had seen previously because I know what I am getting myself into - Cast Away.
For starters, what other actor can you sit and watch for the majority of a film, alone on an island? Ninety percent of the film is of Tom Hanks himself and boy, does he know how to hold a film. He makes me laugh when he is discovering how to survive on the island and can make me cry when expressing his loss of his ex-lover Kelly for the second time.
The film itself touches upon human behaviour, survival instinct, love, determination and adaptability. It has so many factors it is hard to find a flaw in this film.
My favourite aspect of the film is Chuck's yearning for a companion when he is stranded on the island. The fact is, it is human nature to set up home, a comfortable setting that puts you at ease and it is that same nature that requires us to stay sane by finding a way to communicate, even on an inhabitable island. Wilson (the ball with the blood hand-print for a face) is Chuck's sanity and companionship. It is his reason for surviving four years and his escape from the island. Wilson is his best friend.
The scene where Chuck has to choose between his raft and Wilson is painstaking as you feel his anguish in making this decision. Wilson helped him in so many ways but he knew what he had to do to ensure his survival.
Another great scene from the film is when Kelly runs back to Chuck and tells him he is the love of her life. However she chooses her husband and child over Chuck. This scene makes me cry so much because Chuck waited four years to see Kelly and in that time he used her as a reason to carry on living and breathing. She was his hope mechanism that ensured his survival (along with the enigmatic Wilson). She had moved on and he had lost her all over again.
You really want her to just ditch her new life and run away with Chuck but as an adult she made a painful but mature decision. I am a romantic and would say 'screw that' and take my child and run but hey, that's just me! I like to follow my heart and hate smart decisions!
''I've lost her all over again. I'm so sad that I don't have Kelly. But I'm so grateful that she was with me on that island. And I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?''
Beautiful film with everything you could want. I can watch this film hundreds of times and still feel the same about it. Tom Hanks is a truly great actor and worthy of my Top 10 Actors of all time, especially thanks to this film. He dedicated himself to the role by gaining weight to film the first half of the film and then taking a year to grow his hair and beard and lose weight to add authenticity to the role. He went back to looking like a young Tom Hanks in Big (1988).
This film will always get a thumbs up from me and although this is not a new release I will rate it an 9/10. Great viewing, over and over again!
Lately I have been slacking in the film department. I haven't made the time to follow up on my film obsessions to see films such as The Avengers Assemble (12A), What to Expect When You're Expecting (12A) or Prometheus (15). I have been wanting to see a number of films but I have also been trying to read up on some classics and get in touch with my poetry!
I have been writing for a poetry blogspot - FluidLanguage -for a few months now and I have realised I have not read enough poetry to help inspire me for future work. So I have been reading the likes of Emily Bronte, Sappho and Homer as well as some classic books I purchased in a quaint antique store in Weymouth.

I have also been focusing on building my loving collection of DVDs. My main aim is to collect every film that stars Leonardo DiCaprio because as most people who know me, they know I am a massive fan of his work. So far I have 11 of his films:

Now for me, films are a memory of my childhood where I sat up late with my Dad being allowed to watch films my friends probably didn't even know about. I allow myself to escape from the real world by watching them and I like to learn about them and collect them. This is the same for my writing and poetry. I like to read up and learn more so that I can improve.
I have neglected my blog in the last month or so but in that time I have read some amazing books and poems. One of my favourite's is by Sappho:

However I do miss the cinema! I have missed out on some films I really need to see so I will be making a few necessary trips to catch up!
Hope the rambling's put all my readers in the mood to stick on a film! I watched To Wong Foo (1995),Con Air (1997) and Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010) last night in a movie marathon and I realised how much I missed sitting and watching movies on the sofa with friends and popcorn. The Bank Holiday was the perfect excuse but I need to start doing this more often, it saves me money but also allows me to brush up on my movie knowledge for the film game a twitter pal @Ant_Wright_ and I came up with called #NameThatFilm.

Plot: The high school friends reunite for a reunion arranged by John, one of the MILF duo. They all meet up to re-live their high school days even though their lives have changed. Oz is a sports presenter with a narcissistic girlfriend, Jim is married to Michelle with a son but experiencing problems in the bedroom and Kevin is happily married and working from home while Finch is a world traveller supposedly. Stifler is the most unchanged of the guys, working as a temp and just wanting his old high school life back. They all find themselves getting into the same old mischief they used to get themselves into but with older heads on their shoulders and realise that even after all this time, their friendship has stood the test of time.

When I saw the poster for the newest and potentially last instalment of American Pie - Reunion, I was so glad to see all the cast back in the game! The first two films are the epitome of my teenage years and were the first films that I watched that had the laughs and the sex that made us all cringe and cry with laughter at the same time. So needless to say, I made my way to the cinema the same weekend it was released and I was impressed.
Firstly the opening scene did not disappoint. You see good old Jim and Michelle not failing to entertain us with their self-penetration antics! I love the song choice of R Kelly - Bump and Grind to set the mood for Jim before his son interrupts with seriously painful repercussions! I felt all the guy's pain in the audience!
This set the bar for the rest of the film. I was pleasantly surprised that throughout I was kept on my toes and laughing. The film is based around the idea of the school reunion set up by John (John Cho) who was one of the original MILF guys who had a thing for Stifler's Mom. I love the fact that even the secondary actor's are from the original cast and even their story lines are taken into consideration, as MILF guy number one was nowhere to be seen as a fight between them was implied.
Jim's Dad is always the highlight of the film with his cringe Father-Son chats but as he is now a widower he is more dependent on Jim but he has to juggle a sexually frustrated wife, a lonely Father and reuniting with his old school friends.
The reunion reminds the guys how much they have all changed and a piece of them wants to go back to their old days. They feel old entering their town and have to face the facts that growing up isn't all it's cracked up to be. They go to a beach party for Jim's neighbour who has a massive crush on him and he is forced to take her home drunk which leads the boys to have a night just like the old days.
This night also brings up Kevin's old feelings for Vicky and makes Oz re-think his relationship with his girlfriend as he sees Heather again. Stifler is still up to his old tricks and is always the life and soul of the party, even if the group tend to make him the outsider.
For me, the best part of the film is Stifler's sophisticated party that was meant to make everyone reminisce about the old days but just shows them how old they all are 13 years on from high school. I like the fact that Stifler's Mom is still hot but this time she has her sights set on Jim's Dad, so some happiness has come from the party.
The film ties up loose ends and reconnects a lot of old story lines which is what makes it a perfect end to the reign of American Pie. You see Stifler stand up for himself and finally be accepted by the group, Jim and Michelle reconnect where it all began, Oz get his girl and Finch come clean and own up to his typical 9-5 life. Most of all, the cherry on top, is when Stifler gets his own back on Finch and the MILF duo reunite!
The film shows you how good friendships will always last and even though you change and things can never be like they were at high school, you can still keep the original bond and be friends until the end.
My view: A good end (if it is even the end, I feel this should be the end as it is tied up nicely) to a brilliant set of teenage comedy films. The characters still have their great chemistry which is what the film thrives on. I would have liked a little bit more involvement from Vicky as she is just left single and not much else is said! I just hope there are no more spin-offs like American Pie - Band Camp as the original cast are what makes these films so successful and entertaining. Leave it to the professionals!

Note: Found this artwork on Deviantart and loved the modern twist on my favourite cartoon so I created a poem that reflects the story of The Little Mermaid.
Plot: Two not so likely friends from high school pair up to join to Police. They befriend each other for the benefit of their work and become closer than they ever imagined considering their unsavoury friendship at school. However the two are forced to go undercover at a high school due to their unprofessional behaviour on the job and their youthful appearances. This forces them to re-live high school and track down a drug ring within the school supplying a synthetic drug with severe side effects.
This film, 21 Jump Street 2012 is based on the original Television Series starring Johnny Depp which ran from 1987 to 1991 with a total of 103 episodes. The film follows a similar plot with up to date elements. The two starring actors are perfectly cast to play the popular guy (Jenko) and the nerd (Schmidt). Some may say this film follows a stereotypical framework but it works within the film and it is a common theme within high school situations.
What I love about this adaptation is the genuine chemistry between Hill and Tatum. The snippet at the beginning of the film highlights their disputes but also shows us a brief similarity the boys have, one being popular but not having a chance at college while the other is academic but not having any luck with friends or girls. You see them both have a brief tearful moment which inevitably brings them closer together when they are both reunited as they enrol with the Police.
They are assigned park duty and do their best to arrest drug dealers which leads them facing undercover duty with Captain Dickson due to their behaviour during the 'chase' and their youthful looks. They are considered a joke on the force as Schmidt lacks the balls to shoot and carry out an arrest while Jenko has the tough demeanour but doesn't even know the Miranda rights.
This task takes them back in time, Schmidt is terrified he will have to re-live the torment he suffered at school while Jenko thinks he will breeze through just as he did in the past. There is a mix up and the boys have to take each other's classes. The boys have to try and track down the ring leaders within the school but school since their day has drastically changed and their roles are reversed, causing uneasy tension leading their bond to be questioned.
Some of the funniest scenes come from Hill and Tatum's interactions with each other. The scene in the bathroom where they try not to ingest the drug given to them by Eric, the eco-friendly popular drug dealer, is by far the funniest I have seen in a very long time.
I love the fact that Schmidt gets a taste of the popular life and Jenko gets to make genuine friends and realise he has so much more potential. The film shows how difficult high school can be and how much you can miss out on depending on what route you choose to take. The moral to the story, that Schmidt and Jenko genuinely care and love each other, just like the brother's they are playing for this undercover operation, is heart warming.
My View: This film rivals that of Superbad 2007 and Pineapple Express 2008. It has slapstick humour, laugh out loud moments and a good message behind it all. I was engaged throughout and that is my kind of film! I am a big Jonah Hill fan but I now have a new love for Channing Tatum (not just for his looks, which I have always favoured) as his comedic skills really shone in this film. There are a few twists and a shocker at the end so this should be on your list to watch and it will be on my DVD list to purchase for sure!

Plot: This biographical film focuses on the life and work of J.Edgar Hoover, the director of the FBI. It examines his personal life that he kept hidden as this exposure could have ruined his career developments. It explores the difficulties this bureau had in it's beginnings in 1935. It highlights the impact J.Edgar had in developing the technologies we are now familiar with in today's society i.e. finger printing but his controversial actions in and out of office were what made him a figure to be remembered.

J.Edgar for me was an utter joy to watch. Many who know I have an obsession with Leonardo DiCaprio will assume it is just because he is the leading man but alas, my thoughts on this film stem deeper than that alone. I loved this film because it not only gave me an understanding of a historical figure but also because it gave me and insight into his personal life and allowed DiCaprio to fully engross himself in this character's troubled life.
This film highlights the career of a great yet controversial man who was the founder of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and remained the director until his death in 1972.Through this time he battled his conflicting personal life and this film beautifully exposes the stigma and trauma he must of experienced.
DiCaprio really submerged himself into playing J.Edgar which is what makes him a great actor. He had the accent, the ticks and the subtle looks that made the homosexual element of this film not too obvious yet just about readable before it was made apparent.
The three main influential figures in J.Edgar's life were his Mother, played by Judi Dench, Clyde Tolson, his right hand man and Helen Gandy, his secretary. All three impacted his life and decisions in various ways and made him the man he became.
His loving Mother wanted him to always remain strong and not let anyone walk over him in his career. He took her words very seriously and always wanted to please her. When she knew his feelings towards men were not what she had expected, she defiantly said she would not want a 'daffodil' for a son which he took on board until her death, where he had a brief meltdown in her closet! Dench played this role to perfection, as expected. She was strong yet vulnerable towards her later years but never let her guard down when it came to her sons inner yearnings.
Her words rung through his mind and stopped him from fully expressing his adoration and love for Clyde but there was one emotional scene where he does expose his weakness for him. On a vacation the two spend together the love between them is explored after a fight about a woman Edgar is considering for marriage. Tolson is not happy and does not hold back in letting Edgar know about this. They have their dispute and share a kiss which Edgar is shocked by. When Tolson threatens to leave, Edgar begs him to stay. Tolson agrees on the condition that a woman is never discussed again.
For me this scene was so poignantly real and it made me shed a tear. Edgar knows he cannot have his personal thoughts exposed as this could threaten his career and to an extent he doesn't want them exposed to shame him Mother but deep down he knows he cannot live without Clyde in his life. They then both go on living a secret as keeping it hidden is better than not having it at all.
Armie Hammer, previously known for his role as the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network, truly shone in this film for me. He was charming, caring and intellectual, everything you believe Edgar would fall for. He played his part with ease and has really claimed his place within the acting arena.
Helen Candy also influences Edgar's life as she is the only woman he can trust other than his Mother and she supports him to the very end. He has her like he would have a wife only this is a platonic friendship that is essential for Edgar's survival in this industry as she keeps him grounded as well as being the protector of his 'personal and confidential' files.
Edgar was effectively married to the FBI, he developed and enhanced it in so many ways and refused to let this go even when his health slipped. He did reluctantly have visits from his Doctor but ultimately the strain of this position in his later years effected his health greatly, eventually ending in a heart attack.
There are many elements to this film that highlights Edgar's exaggerated involvement in the hands-on element of the job, as well as his controversial use of the evidence he collected and the bribery that he attempted.
The film flashes between past and present day and really goes into the depths of the inner workings of a great but troubled man. It is a must see for all people interested in films of this nature, American history and also to see how well acted all the major parts are.
My view: Being a lover of Leonardo DiCaprio, I say this is a a film worth adding to your list. It is historical, thought-provoking and above all, emotional. You would not think you would cry at a film like this but I was balling at many parts concerning the caring and subtle relationship between Clyde and Edgar. The film runs on truths and rumours concerning Edgar's life from the beginnings of his career to his death but it gives a greater understanding of this historical figure.
