21 & Over (15)

Starring: Miles Teller (Miller), Justin Chon (Jeff Chang) & Skylar Astin (Casey)

Recently we have had an epidemic of films that focus on three things, 1. having as much fun as possible doing as many ridiculous things in one night 2. Drinking more than you can physically handle and 3. getting girls. I have no problem with films that stem from these factors for example Superbad, Project X and The Hangover. They are highly entertaining and hard to match on the humour scale. I believe these films reach a very profitable target audience which is why yet another similarly themed film has hit our screens again.

21 & Over revolves around three old friends who have lost touch once moving to college (which parallels the theme in Superbad where Evan and Seth are losing touch before they enter their college years and one crazy night at a party rekindles their friendship). Miller and Casey decide to surprise their pre-med friend (Jeff Chang) with a surprise 21st drink up as a 'right of passage'. Along the way they realise how little they know about their seemingly perfect friend. It is rather cliché but a little heart warming too as many of us can relate to losing touch with old highschool friends.

I found many parts of this film to be funny - the banter between the three of them is natural but it doesn't quite level up to the predecessors within this genre.

This is a good effort, a decent film but very similar to what has been out before - watch it if you enjoy these types of films as it does not disappoint and do not take it too seriously - it's a bit of college fun with a slight twist. I like the frat party scenes and the pre-drunk section where the boys are entering every club that has ever 'carded' them and refused them entry - I know we have all been there before!
